Pentagon: Transgender People Will Be Allowed To Enlist In Military In 2018

Despite President Donald Trump's opposition on the matter, transgender individuals will be allowed to enlist in the military starting on January 1st, as per a Pentagon official's statement to The Associated Press on Monday (December 11).

In the interview, spokesperson Maj. David Eastburn revealed that the new guidelines for transgender review are somewhat reminiscent of the conditions used when recruiting individuals with particular medical or mental factors like bipolar discover. "Due to the complexity of this new medical standard, trained medical officers will perform a medical prescreen of transgender applicants for military service who otherwise meet all applicable applicant standards," he said.

The new policy hits back at President Trump's opposition, which was widely criticized after he shared his thoughts on Twitter in July. Since then, two federal courts have ruled against the proposed ban.
