Online Sales Show Record Spending Over Holiday Season

More and more people continue to move their shopping online, helping set a new record for the 2017 holiday season. According to CNBC shoppers spent a record $108-billion online during the holiday season, a 14.7% increase from last year. Overall, consumers spent $691.9 billion during the holidays, up 5.5% from 2016.

The shopping season got off to a fast start thanks to online sales that started on Black Friday.  According to the Columbus Dispatch, consumers spent $19.6 billion between Black Friday and Cyber Monday alone, a 15.2% increase from the previous year.

$7 billion of that was ordered using a smartphone or tablet, showing consumers are shifting away from shopping on their computers. Overall, $35.9 billion worth of merchandise was ordered on a mobile device, a 28% increase from the year before. That represents about one-third of the total money spent online, and analysts anticipate the share of sales on smartphones and tablets to grow.

Adobe Analytics, who issued the report, said that the increase in spending was the result of "strong consumer sentiment, low unemployment, and a strong stock market."
