Substitute Teacher's Gun Accidentally Goes Off In First-Grade Classroom

A 72-year-old substitute teacher at Blountsville Elementary School in Alabama was arrested after police say he accidentally discharged his gun in a first-grade classroom, causing the school to go into a soft lockdown. There were children in the classroom at the time and one child was struck by a bullet fragment. That student was checked out by the school's nurse and did not require further treatment.

Henry Rex Weaver was detained by school officials until police arrived to take him into custody. Weaver is being charged with reckless endangerment, third-degree assault, and possession of a firearm on school grounds.

“Obviously I’m concerned about a substitute teacher bringing a gun to school, and what we can do to prevent that in the future," Blount County Sheriff Mark Moon said.

It is unclear why Weaver brought the gun onto school property.
